Planters Page

Since the early 1990's I've been interested in vertical growing because of my involvement with greenhouses and my interest in growing strawberries. I experimented with growing strawberries in my greenhouses. The first variety grown was 'Tristar' but as I got more interested in alpine strawberries I grew a few of these in my greenhouse. I knew that I couldn't afford to grow them on benches as was done with the bedding plants that we grew so the search was on for ways to increase the number of plants grown in a given space.

This process evolved from using 6" heat tube (poly tubing) to 6", 8" and 10" PVC pipes. A support system was constructed with 2x6 lumber in a 1,000 square foot section of one greenhouse. The experiments went on for a year but we could not find a market for the berries (that would pay the needed premium) so it was abandoned - reluctantly!

Within a year or so we found a field to rent where we could grow strawberries, both 'Tristar' and alpines. This went on for two seasons. Over the years we've continued to experiment on a small scale, mainly with alpine strawberries in tubs, barrels, pots of various sizes, etc. Recently we discovered stacking planters and have begun testing them. So far I'm impressed. The testing scale has increased and I'm now looking at other systems, most not commercially available at this point.

Systems that have been tested that are available for purchase are on the Order Growing Systems Page.
